BACKGROUND: Rip Hunter at the Arrowverse Wiki or if you want to read the very wordy version of history I wrote for another game, see the Character History here. Notably in the character history linked, there are sections designating updated history; this reflects when Rip was sent home for a canon update at one point in the game.

Speaking of! From the point Rip has been drawn from, he'll have been in Wonderland for about ten months, interrupted by a single trip home at about the six month mark. While there he worked to form alliances while doing what he could to test the limits of Wonderland between events, or the periodic manipulation of the world and/or population based on the memories of a single person. The events typically marked the most chaotic times within Wonderland and happened about every few weeks. Some events were more impactful than others, however. During his second event, for example, Rip died while trying to save a child from drowning only to be revived a day later due to the mechanics of Wonderland. He and the other Legends present were also attacked at at the five month mark by the "Mirrorverse" version of Mick Rory, a duplicate created to be the mirror of the original.

Shortly after that, Rip was sent home where he ultimately was brainwashed by Eobard Thawne as mentioned above. Once Wonderland drew him back in, Rip immediately tried to isolate himself from everyone who would want to "correct" his warped mindset, and even went so far as to kill Ray Palmer towards that effort. Rip was, however, returned to his original personality regardless. Then to make matters even more complicated, the event immediately after that saw him being brainwashed again, albeit only for a few days. This time he believed he owned a staging company setting up lights and mechanics for the upcoming Republican convention in a world ravaged by the zombie apocalypse.

Like I said though--only for a few days.

The last thing Rip will remember before arriving in Prismatica is an event in Wonderland based on his own experiences, one in which the worst moments of his life (his family being murdered) are put on a repeat loop for anyone to see. After days of not sleeping or eating, he's drifted off due to outright fatigue while keeping watch over the door leading to his memories--and when he wakes, he'll be in a new place entirely.

Cheers.

Being a CRAU will grant Rip enough of his memories and experience to be more "settled" into the idea of being stuck in another pocket dimension, or whatever Prismatica presents itself to be to those characters within it. In terms of what CR he'll remember, I plan on the following:

Peggy Carter: Peggy and Rip had started developing a bond during their tenure in Wonderland, founded on the notion that they would not let the machinations of the world overcome them or their sense of self. This was particularly important for Rip, as this was established after he'd been mentally manipulated both at home and in Wonderland to living as four different personalities. Remembered with permission of the player, who is also apping Peggy in this round.

Billy Kaplan: Billy and Rip never actually met in Wonderland, but given the confined nature of that world and prominence of the network, Rip would at least recognize Billy as someone who had been in that same pocket dimension. Remembered with permission of the player, who currently plays Billy in Prismatica.

PERSONALITY:

Rip Hunter is complicated. Also a bit contradictory.

First and foremost, Rip is a Time Master, devoted to protecting history; it’s an inescapable aspect of his personality, and his instinct is to act according to that purpose. When approaching a problem, he’s able to breakdown how different actions could lead to different scenarios (usually the worst-case variety) and opts for the solution that has the least impact to timeline, including in how he utilizes the skills of those around him. This role also dictates his skewed sense of morality, as unlike most “superheroes,” he doesn’t put everything on the line to save people. Rather, he understands that people are meant to die at certain times and will not act to change that, including when it meant him leaving an entire town to be destroyed as it was meant to happen.

As Rip is used to working alone, he’s often at odds with those around him. His methods are so often in conflict with the Legends’ tactics that the group starts expecting to get lectured at the end of every mission on what they did wrong, even if their goals are technically achieved. It’s often easier for Rip to act as an individual agent, which he will do if he believes it the best course of action, regardless of the opinions or consent of those around them. When the Waverider is threatened by an atomic bomb, for example, he scatters the other Legends throughout history without consulting them. Yet he will also relent if allowing someone else to act increases the chance of success; rather than trying to solve Kendra and Sara’s corresponding psychological problems, for example, he partners them together so they can help each other. In even later canon (after Rip has been pulled), when Rip realizes Sara is a better team leader than he is, he relinquishes the Captaincy position to her.

Rip isn’t unaffected by such choices, however; he’s plagued with guilt, and when told he can go to hell he boldly responds that it’s most likely. He holds himself responsible for the deaths of his teammates, particularly Carter early on. This drives him to take greater individual risks rather than relying on the team, including offering himself as a sacrifice to the Pilgrim when it could save the others. He would like to be a good man, notably having savored the “pull of heroism” while in the Old West, but ultimately sacrifices that role to protect the timeline. This doesn’t mean he lacks all humanity, and quite often his teammates successfully appeal to this better side of him (saving a group of refugees from Savage, or not killing a child to save his son).

The one thing Rip is more devoted to than time is to the people he cares about, especially his family. Even after nearly being dismissed from the Time Masters for their affair, Rip chooses to stay with Miranda; this same love is what ultimately has him betray the Time Masters when they refuse to stop Savage. While he still acts to minimize the effect, Rip seeks to change history to save his wife and son by creating the Legends and stealing a timeship. Yet as noted, there are things he cannot bring himself to do, including killing another child to guarantee Jonas will live, or breaking time by going back to events he already changed via time travel. He also does what he can to ensure the Legends don’t suffer similar losses of family unless its absolutely unavoidable; while he acts to save Martin’s marriage when time-meddling threatens it, he cannot take Sara to save her sister because it will mean the death of Sara herself and her father.

When he fails to save them, he replays their final message to him over and over—but when needed to act, he ultimately answers the call. Rip believes that humans, himself included, possess the twin blessing and curse of the drive to move forward even in the worst of circumstances. In turn, when he cannot act in some manner, he grows the most hopeless, losing himself to depression and quite often alcohol.

These characteristics define Rip Hunter as he truly is, yet at his current canon point he has been psychologically altered by his enemies. Evil!Rip no longer believes in the purpose he devoted himself life to but rather sees his former self as a puppet and a fool who lost everything that mattered to him. Because of this, he’s willing to do absolutely anything in order to achieve his goals. He also no longer possesses the guilt or loyalty of his former self, most plainly evidenced when he shoots Sara and smiles on seeing her in agony because he feels so free.

While he’s yet to be fixed in canon, Rip underwent cognitive correction while in his prior game, so as a CRAU he’s back to his normal self—with added bonus guilt from having killed or maimed a handful of his closest allies. Being in Wonderland also allowed him to be slightly more open with his profession and his past, both because of events that forced the truth out (including the one he’s pulled from, when he couldn’t lie), and because of the known confines of that prison. No one who was ejected from Wonderland remembered Wonderland, and while that didn’t leave him careless, he was more willing to admit to being a time traveler in an attempt to cooperatively figure out how to willingly escape that pocket dimension. Proximity and mutual circumstance also saw him relying on other people, notably Peggy Carter (played then by the person apping her to Prismatica now), who reached out to him after his true personality had been restored. In doing so, she positioned herself as someone Rip could count on, doubling down on what he knew of her competence based on their prior conversations.

POWERS/ABILITIES:

Despite very intense, specialized training and skills that go along with being one of the best Time Masters in all of history, Rip himself is very much human.

INVENTORY:
  1. 1 laser gun circa 2166 stylized to look like an old west revolver
  2. 1 disabling ray which uses a close proximity flash of light to instantly knock out whoever it’s aimed at
  3. 1 crystal decanter and matching crystal tumblers; note the decanter is filled with a very high quality scotch
  4. 1 miniaturized non-functioning Waverider; this model was pulled from the closet on Rip’s first day in Wonderland
  5. 1 large hiking backpack that doesn't actually have anything useful in it, but at least he can carry around the other stuff?
  6. 1 1888 First Edition copy of A Study in Scarlet by Arthur Conan Doyle
