-Michael is originally from a much older time period than 2166. I've decided to go with 1860's England. That he lived on the streets and was a cutpurse is canon. At one point he also severely injured someone who came after him in an effort to survive; he'd been cornered and his only recourse was to lash out so he could run. He doesn't know if the man lived or died, nor has he ever felt the desire to find out.
-Because he was on the streets at such a young age, academically Michael was behind when he first was recruited to the Time Masters. He couldn't read or write, and was subjected to some bullying because of it. In order to cover up this insecurity, Michael would act out. It wasn't until Mary Xavier sat him down and told him she knew he was better than he acted that he confessed the real truth: he was afraid if he failed, he'd be returned to the streets.
She convinced him that it wouldn't be the case--more to the point, she wouldn't let that be the case. She believed he'd been brought to her for a reason, but he had to be the one to find it. After that, Michael dedicated himself to his studies, and excelled at them. Moreover, he actually learned that he could make friends with the other children, rather than seeing them as competition for food and shelter.
-Michael did not choose the name Rip Hunter--but secretly, he thought it was super cool.
-Rip and Miranda were rivals at the Time Academy, often competing for top scores and high marks. Rip was better at the book-side of things, while Miranda easily outshone him in simulated combat and tactics.
-Miranda kissed Rip first; Rip shocked them both by kissing her back.
-Rip couldn't risk wearing a wedding ring for the same reasons he wasn't supposed to be married in the first place. If any of his enemies saw it, they would know there was someone in his life they could target. As such, he never possessed one.
It never bothered him so much while Miranda was alive; after her death, he became quietly resentful of not having it.
-Jonas grew up hearing many of the same bedtime stories and fairytales Rip came to love after he started reading. He had a vivid imagination and dreamed of going to far off places. Miranda always said that more than anything marked him as his father's son.
-Rip purposely kept the pocketwatch set to match Miranda and Jonas' time; this way, he would always know when it was he was coming home, be it in the middle of the night or during the day. It also served as a tether, and a reminder of how long he'd spent away from them.
Rip's room is modeled after his quarters on the Waverider. There are fewer books, but more bits and pieces of attempted tech scattered about. There's also a perfect scale model of the Waverider itself hanging out on a shelf.
Rip's time drive collection:
So whenever Rip tries to get anything even remotely advanced from the closet, it will give him some form of toy instead. Because he's a collector, he's decided to have a bit of bitter fun with it--so now he's got time drives based on the various events that happen in Wonderland.
It's like snow globes, but only way more sci-fi cause I said so.
-A clear shell with a sand inside and a pyramid in the center -A blue shell with water inside, and infinity symbols embossed on the side -A black opaque shell; if someone were to pick it up and rub their thumb over the right place, they'll feel where the word "sleep" is engraved into the side, although it's nearly impossible to see. -A shell with gray sides, a clear top, and a bottom painted to resemble space; meant to be viewed from the top. When one looks in, the bottom edges have been lined to resemble The Citadel where the event took place. -A clear time drive with nothing inside. If someone touches it, there's a spark resembling a tear.
In addition, Rip has such "models" that are just plays on the traditional time drive; these represent his attempts to get a functioning time drive from the closet. He would have more, but he's gotten rid of a number of them.
Other possessions of note: -Alcohol: Rip's always got a bottle of something out, often in a decanter, and with glasses available for use. Rip's got good taste and a magic closet, so expect quality stuff. -Revolver: A futuristic revolver styled after a pistol from the Old West. Rip almost always carries this on him. -Stunner: A weapon capable of knocking someone out with a flash of light. He's slightly less likely to carry this around than the revolver, but he doesn't leave it laying around. -Pocketwatch: A gold, classic pocketwatch; opening it reveals a picture of a woman and a child inside. This is typically kept hidden, and if it goes missing or Rip sees someone snooping, he will very likely get pissed.
Rip has three areas of noticeable scarring, although they are all easily (and usually) hidden by clothing:
-A bullet wound in his left hip from a quick draw. Rip ultimately won, but couldn't really sneak off to his timeship to have the wound fully healed. -A series of long scars on his back from flogging during his time in Egypt. Vandal Savage (then Hath-Set) had Rip tortured in order to find out why Rip had attempted to kill him. Given they denied him food or water, it's unlikely they provided him medical treatment. -A shilling-sized burn on his right shoulder; from when Rip blocked a shot by Vandal Savage aimed at Kendra. Between the chaos of the events and being captured by the Time Masters shortly after, there wasn't time for full and proper treatment.
